To celebrate our 50th newsletter edition, I thought it would be fun to look back over all of our previous editions and highlight my favourite articles. Some of them I enjoyed writing, some of them you enjoyed reading, and all of them capture the spirit of what In the Wool is all about. My aim is always to inspire other makers, whether that be through sharing personal experiences, suggesting yarns and free patterns, or giving you a behind the scenes look at my family’s yarn shop. These 3 articles can be enjoyed by both new subscribers and those of you who have been with us since the beginning, so without further adieu, here are my top picks…
1. Maker Spotlight: Mr & Mrs B
This is by far the favourite ever published by In the Wool. It is one of my most viewed and commented on articles, as well as being one that I thoroughly enjoyed writing. Mr and Mrs B (Peter and Sue) are a crafting couple I first discovered on Instagram. They are both passionate makers, enjoying a wide range of crafts, and they are always sharing their fantastic projects online. After following them for a while, I knew this was a story I wanted to share with our subscribers.
Peter and Sue shared some great experiences with us, speaking of their travels to yarn festivals across the UK and even a knitting holiday to Norway. They have taken part in many make-alongs and are prominent members of the craft community on Instagram. I would really recommend reading this article as Mr and Mrs B provided tonnes of inspiration for other makers, as well as the wholesome story of their creative journeys.

2. Teddy Bears’ + Wild Animals’ Picnic
Whenever we launch a new handmade window display at our yarn shop, I really like giving our subscribers a little behind the scenes look at how it all came together. Over the years we’ve had many themes, including Moomins, Alice in Wonderland, a day at the beach and an underwater world. One of my personal favourites was the Teddy Bears’ and Wild Animals’ picnic window. This was a unique spin on the classic teddy bears’ picnic, featuring animals such as a flamingo, a sloth, a zebra and monkey, as well as a delicious looking picnic spread.
This article reveals where we got a lot of the knitting and crochet patterns from, so if any of these makes catch your eye you’ll be able to find the sources easily. It also goes into detail about the different yarns that we used to bring this window to life. If you love novelty makes or handmade projects that are a bit of fun, definitely take a look at this article!

3. 2021: My Year in Makes
I’ve included this article in this list because this was a really fun one for me to write. I had to look back over a full year and reflect on the projects I made, from original designs and handmade gifts to themed projects and failed experiments. Seeing a years’ worth of hard work laid out helped me realise how much I had accomplished in that time, and how far I had come as a crafter. I learned lots of new skills and tried projects outside of my comfort zone. Most importantly, I developed my creativity and was confident enough to try designing my own patterns for the first time.
When you’re a maker, sometimes you can plough through project after project without slowing down to appreciate the process. Writing this article was the perfect opportunity to do so; it’s important to take pride in your makes, because you put your time and effort into making something really special. If you’re ever in doubt about your abilities or dedication, you should try rounding up all the things you’ve made over the last year as this will prove you’re doing better than you think you are.
