Craft Talk with @eleanor.rosecrochet
We catch up with fellow maker Eleanor to talk yarn, Etsy favourites, and finding inspiration...
For many of us, being in lockdown gave our passion for crafts a new lease of life. All of a sudden, there was time to finish off the work-in-progress pile. There was even time to commit to your next big project or learn a new skill, because what better way to pass the time? As the year 2020 continues to go up in flames, one of the few good things we can take from it is the amount of crafters taking to social media to share their makes. Here we catch up with @eleanor.rosecrochet to talk about yarn, Etsy favourites, and finding inspiration.
@eleanor.rosecrochet started posting her projects to Instagram at the start of lockdown after encouragement from family and friends, and now has over 1,500 followers. Along with beautiful custom crochet skirts and amigurumi film characters, she shares the makes that are available in her Etsy store, such as baskets, bags, and adorable earrings. We asked Eleanor to reveal what the bestseller is in her Etsy store. The answer was her original crochet baskets, and it’s easy to see why.
Crochet storage is one of the best ways to add unique pieces in your home. When you can control the size and the colour scheme, you can create something that suits your style exactly. As Eleanor makes many custom items, we wanted to know how she creates unique items and whether this was a challenge.
Eleanor can do macrame and her mum taught her how to knit. She found crochet during her foundation Art and Design year before university. ‘Somewhere down the line I decided to try natural dyeing for my textiles project and then decided to teach myself to crochet with the dyed yarn that I made!’ We asked Eleanor what type of yarn is her favourite to work with, and she chose organic cotton.
In Eleanor’s Etsy shop, you can find lots of different styles of earrings including cherries, flowers, and even mini bees! She said the micro crochet bees are her favourite to make, ‘just because micro things are so satisfying!’ Recently, Eleanor launched a range of charity earrings in support of Black Lives Matter (more info at the end). We think this is a wonderful idea as using your strengths and skills to advocate for social justice can help spread the message, especially when you have a platform on Instagram that others look to.
Finally, we wanted to know where Eleanor gets inspiration for her upcoming projects. It’s always helpful to hear where others find ideas as there might be something you haven’t thought of before. Eleanor said she looks to a range of places: ‘I love going to vintage events- I get a lot of inspiration from the past! And Pinterest is really great too.’ We can certainly agree that Pinterest is useful, especially if you’re in the mood for scrolling! As for whether lockdown has affected her ideas and creativity, Eleanor described it as ‘a mixed bag’.
