It’s official: my yarn stash is getting too big. I know; I’m just as shocked as you are. Over time, all the small amounts of yarn I’ve acquired have built up and turned into a beast I no longer have control over. So, I’m sending my stash to summer boot camp - it’s time to take back control!
Join me for a summer of stash busting.
For the next 3 months, we’re going to delve deep into the back of our cupboards and pull all the yarn out from under the bed, and turn the stash into several finished projects. It sounds like an overwhelming task, but I’m going to break it down into small projects so that you can keep working on your current WIPs and clear a bit of space on the side.
Each month you’ll receive a new worksheet and a range of free patterns to choose from that are ideal for stash busting. If we can commit to one smaller make a week, or something medium sized every month, we can transform yarns that are gathering dust into fun summer projects!
If you’re a yarn hoarder like me, then this series is for you.
Each week will have a new theme and a few patterns for you to choose from that I have chosen specifically with stash busting in mind. For our first month, the projects will be small and won’t require too much yarn, so you’ll be able to easily fit these fast makes into your schedule and clean up your odds and ends.
In every edition of In the Wool over the summer, you will receive an update on what our theme for the week is and some free patterns for inspiration. You can join in at any time, and feel free to email any of your finished stash busting projects to help stay on track and get a shoutout in this series! Email your photos to help@babesinthewool.co.uk 🧶

Week 1: Bookmarks
I’ve chosen bookmarks for our first theme as they’re such a small project that you’ll be able to make these in one sitting. They’re great for using up smaller amounts of yarn that you have lying around, and are also handy to have on hand for your summer reading. If you have family and friends who are going on holiday this summer and will be reading by the pool, then handmade bookmarks make a great gift and will create space in your own home!
You can use whatever patterns you like, there are tonnes on Pinterest, or even make up your own patterns. Here are a few suggestions:
Tess Treasured Bookmark by Sisters in Stitch (crochet)
Rainbow Bookmark by Mark Kakali (crochet)
Lavender’s Bookmark by Lizzie Rose Knits (knit)

Week 2: Flowers
Our second week will be all about flowers. These designs use such little yarn in absolutely any colour so they’re perfect for the small amounts in your stash that you have no idea what to do with. Add a touch of florals to your summer style by attaching your finished flowers to accessories or making a pretty display for your home.
