Welcome to Yarn Corner! In each edition of NewsletterPlus, we put a different yarn in the hot seat and bring you everything you need to know about it. As a subscriber, you will receive a discount code for the corresponding yarn every time (featured below). This week, we’re taking a look at Sirdar’s Country Classic 4ply.
This range is a 50% wool and 50% acrylic mix, making for a very soft and versatile yarn. The yarn feels lovely to knit and crochet with, and its high quality does not come at a high cost, being just £2.99 per 50g ball (£2.70 with your subscriber discount).
There are 18 colours in this collection and each of them stands out, with beautiful autumnal and rich jewel tones. We think the shades chosen for this yarn are especially intriguing as they are slightly different to other colours we see on the market. The unique shades draw from a more modern colour palette, working well as block colours and also when they are combined. The patterns that accompany the collection often feature styles such as fair isle.
This yarn was released as part of a Spring range, and is ideal for creating lightweight but warm garments that look great when styled with layers in the Autumn and colder months. Country Classic 4ply is machine washable on a wool cycle setting. The recommended needle and crochet hook size is 3.25mm. Each 50g ball has 200 metres of yarn.

The art of knitting is believed to have originated in the Middle East, with one of the oldest knitted artefacts said to be a pair of socks in Egypt from the 4th Century! There are other knitted items from Egypt dated around 500-1400 AD. Knitting was brought to Europe by travelling wool merchants but interestingly, the ‘purl’ stitch featured in the Egyptian socks did not crop up in Europe until much later in the 16th Century. The word ‘knit’ didn’t make it into the Oxford English Dictionary until the 15th Century.
