Our handmade window display is here for Christmas 2022, and I’m bringing you behind the scenes to see how this seasonal setting came together. Welcome to the Gingerbread Village! We’ve been working on this display for most of this year, and we’ve had our army of crocheting elves helping us along the way. I’ll be sharing the yarns and lovely patterns that we’ve used to help you find some inspiration for your own Christmas projects.
The gingerbread house is a timeless classic when it comes to Christmas, and with all the different elements involved like sweets and icing, we thought it would be fun to bring this to life with yarn.
As well as making classic gingerbread houses, we decided to recreate one of our favourite free crochet patterns from Elisa’s Crochet in a gingerbread style. Check out the gingerbread lighthouse above! We changed up the colour scheme and added some colourful buttons to look like sweets. The yarn used for the gingerbread shade and white icing was James C. Brett‘s Second Chance recycled dk.

In the photo above you will also see some of the Christmassy characters we added to our display. These elf and penguin patterns are from Ricorumi’s Christmas Crochet Along 2022. We always end up making a few designs from their annual Christmas CAL, and these ones were the perfect additions to our window. They were made using Ricorumi DK yarn.

It wouldn’t be a Christmas window without using some of our favourite Tinsel Chunky yarn. We used the green shade to make some little Christmas trees and added some balls of silver to the display for a bit of extra sparkle. The pattern used for the trees is King Cole 9035 which is a knitting pattern.
The Gingerbread Village really came together when we arranged everything in the window. We used a free crochet pattern to make the houses, and then customised them with different colours and varied decorations. We’re very grateful for the help we had from some of our crochet groups with making the gingerbread houses, so we’d like to say a huge thank you to Alison, Linda, Mandy, Helen, Sue and Sheila. Making a display like this is a huge task to undertake and your beautiful crochet work has really made this window shine.

The gingerbread houses have been mounted on a stand that was made by my dad. It’s a sloping cardboard shape with stands at the back for the houses to sit on. The front is made of strips of bamboo that have been painted in different shades of green. This was to give the display a mountain/ forest sort of feel. We also strung fairy lights up and down this part of the display to make the Gingerbread Village even more magical!
Another eye catching piece from this display is the gingerbread train pictured above. This was a paid pattern from Etsy that I’ll link below. As with the gingerbread houses, these patterns were used as a base and not followed exactly so we could add our own take on the designs. The train was made using Sirdar’s Stories DK as there are some fantastic red, green, and all around Christmassy shades in this range. We love how colourful and unusual this design looks; you really can make anything with crochet!

For finishing touches, we added white felt as the base to look like snow and we reused the starry sky backdrop from our ‘Out of this World’ Christmas display from last year. We also got some window decals to stick on that are in the shape of snow covered houses to match our gingerbread houses, as well as some snowflakes. Then, we added a few yarns and colourful baubles to complete the scene.
And there you have it! Our Gingerbread Village Christmas window display for 2022. If you’re in Hull, do come down to the shop and have a look at our display!
