This week’s instalment of Yarn Corner is all about a yarn I’ve been very excited to cover: Rowan Felted Tweed. With gorgeous colours and stunning designs, there’s a lot to love about this range. When we recently started stocking Rowan Yarns, we decided to pick 3 ranges to see how it went, and Felted Tweed just had to be one of them. According to Rowan, this is one of their most popular and best selling ranges, and our local customers can certainly attest to that.
The yarn is a lightweight double knit that has a beautiful tweed effect. The texture of this yarn is one of a kind, made with 50% lightly-felted wool, 25% viscose and 25% alpaca. Felted Tweed is super soft and its composition is ideal for fair-isle knitting and lacework. Rowan describes this yarn as ‘supremely blockable’ due to its texture and spin, so it’s a great choice for garments.
When knitting in garter stitch, the finished fabric is drapey and cosy, as well as light and easy to wear. This makes Felted Tweed a good choice for every season; you can create lightweight accessories, wraps and cardigans for spring/ summer, and warmer garments for layering in autumn/winter.
Rowan has a huge choice when it comes to patterns for Felted Tweed. As well as 13 shades of this stunning yarn, we also have 3 different pattern books. The cardigan pictured above has been a particularly popular design from the main pattern book- here is one of our customers, Helen, in her new knitted cardi!
I love the shades that Helen chose for this project; the blue and orange look great together, and the contrast on the pocket really elevates the design. What I love about these patterns from Rowan is that they are excellent quality. The designs are classic but incorporate modern ideas to create something new, and they really stand out when compared to other brands.
When it comes to colour, you won’t be disappointed. Rowan says that the shades in this collection were inspired by nature, including cool watery tones and warming woodland elements. The mixture of brights and neutrals means you can partner any selection of shades for a striking colour combo. Even the neutrals have a vibrance to them which is guaranteed to make your handmade piece stand out from the crowd.
I think the cohesion between the yarn and the patterns is a really great element of Felted Tweed. The ‘Mode’ book (pictured below) contains 4 designs and is just £3.50 so you get great value for money with this one. The designs are classic and elegant, and I can see these pieces fitting in with any wardrobe. Whether you’re looking to make your winter walks a little cosier, or to switch up smart casual in the workplace, these patterns are a great addition.
The other book is called ‘Little Inspirations’; it contains 7 designs and is £7.99, so again you save a lot of money when compared with buying individual pattern leaflets. The designs in this collection are more complex, containing interesting colour work for creative garments and accessories. I love the wrap pictured below on the right, but this whole collection really is beautiful.
As we only recently expanded this range to include 3 more shades and pattern books, a few of these items are not on our website yet. They will be available very soon, but if you’ve seen something that catches your eye, just send us an email and we’d be happy to send it to you in advance! Our email address is help@babesinthewool.co.uk - feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about this range.
