A colourful new range from Katia
This week we’re taking a closer look at a new yarn from Katia. Our favourite Spanish brand really went above and beyond this year so there are plenty of yarns to keep us occupied during the cooler months. Tornasol comes in generous 100g balls, and is made of acrylic that is machine washable up to 30 degrees. The weight of this yarn is between a double knit and an aran, so be sure to check your gauge before starting a larger project. The suggested hook size is 4.5-5mm and suggested needle size is 5-5.5mm. We tried knitting and crocheting with this yarn to see how it turned out, and settled on 4.5mm knitting needles and a 5.5mm crochet hook for the square below. Every maker is different, so don’t be afraid to try a couple of sizes and see what works best for you!
The shade we used is 54, and as you can see it has excellent stitch definition. The first thing that catches your eye with Tornasol is the shades. It is a variegated yarn with stunning multicolours that really feel autumnal.
This yarn has proved popular with our local customers so far. A couple of them have already knitted garments using Tornasol, and have been very pleased with the results. We ordered Katia’s Tornasol in 6 beautiful shade mixes just to try it out—but this yarn has been so popular that we’ve ordered 2 further colours to complete the line. Shade 51 - Transitions from bright and rusted oranges into a deep cerulean blue that fades into a light sea foam.
Shade 52 - Soft pea green to striped deep orange and striking ochre
Shade 53 - Brighter greens and accented shades of brown weave into an overall ochre stripe
Shade 54 - Sky blue veins separated by faded and strong bands of ochre
Shade 56 - Memories of a spring flower meadow spring forth from mixtures of rose, lilac turquoise, and a soft green
Shade 57 - Deep purples of blackberry are highlighted by a shifting swatch of light pearl and strong greens.
