Welcome Back!
Today I thought we could take a deep dive into something you’re probably already caught up in… handmade Halloween! This is such a fun time of year for makers, filled with novelty projects and creative designs. In this edition, we’ll be taking a look at some of my favourite spooky projects from over the years and, of course, I’ll be sharing lots of free patterns along the way. I also have some lovely customer makes to show you, and a sneak peek at a new crochet project I’ve just started for autumn.
Let’s get into it!
This week we’re taking a closer look at a new yarn from Katia. Our favourite Spanish brand really went above and beyond this year so there are plenty of yarns to keep us occupied during the cooler months. With gorgeous colourways and super soft strands, Tornasol is definitely a yarn to put on your autumn/winter wish list. This is a limited edition yarn of which we stock 6 shades.

Handmade Halloween
As Halloween approaches, I’ve been wondering which new makes I would like to try this year. That got me thinking about previous Halloween craft projects, and I thought it would be fun to dig out a few throwback photos and share some of my spookiest makes from the last few years. Some of these are personal projects and crochet patterns I’ve designed, and some are creations that we used to make Halloween window displays in our yarn shop. Keep reading for handmade Halloween inspiration, some free patterns, and an exclusive first look at this year’s window display!

This week I have a couple of crochet projects to share with you. The first is the amigurumi pig which I *finally* finished, after it sat in a bag for weeks waiting to be sewn up. Although the pattern wasn’t my favourite, I am happy with how this little guy turned out. I added googly eyes instead of embroidered eyes as they always make me smile and bring an extra element of fun into a project. The pig was a gift for my partner’s mum as they are her favourite animal, and she was over the moon to be adding this handmade pig to her collection.
After procrastinating with a couple of different projects, I caved and let myself start yet another make. I’ve still been working on my star blanket but the bigger it gets, the hotter it gets, and it’s a still bit too warm out for me to be working under it all the time. My original goal was to have the blanket finished before the cold weather hits, but I’ve decided it might be better to work on it whilst I’m cold so it can keep me warm as I crochet!
So, that leads us to my newest WIP… As soon as I saw this yarn, I knew it would be perfect for an autumn project. I wanted to make myself a new scarf this year, and this colourway with the sparkle running through was exactly what I was looking for. I spent quite a while looking through different patterns as I had a rough idea of what I wanted but couldn’t find the right one. My vision for this scarf was something with a bit more detail that would challenge me but not be so difficult that I wouldn’t want to work on it. I finally settled on a free crochet pattern from Hobbii called the Starlit Sky Scarf…

Community Creations
We’ve had some excellent project photos from our local customers lately, and I know you’re going to love the makes on show today. First up we have a crochet mandala made by Kathlyn, who made this beautiful piece for her parents’ gold wedding anniversary. The mandala is made from Rico Essentials Crochet Cotton in shade Gold (025), and mounted on a 12” embroidery hoop. Kathlyn used a free crochet pattern from Draiguna called the Starlight Doily. Click here to see the pattern!
Next we have a collection of crochet squares by Sue. The pattern is from the Katia Bunny Blanket Kit that Sue got from our shop earlier this year; she is now making another blanket using Wendy’s Peter Pan DK. These colours look really lovely together and the square is such a pretty design!
Our final Community Creation this week is from Helen. Helen has been working on this crochet star blanket recently, and it has grown to quite a size! The yarn used for this project is Baby Lux DK, a gorgeous bamboo blend from Woolcraft. This is a fabulous colour combination; I love how it can look like a Chrsitmassy blanket or a vibrant throw for anytime.
A huge thank you to Kathlyn, Sue and Helen, for sharing your #babesinthewoolhull projects with us!😁
