Hi there!
I hope you’re all having a great October, filled with fun inspiration and fantastic craft projects. I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again; autumn is my favourite time of year. My crochet projects get cosier, the colour schemes remind me of falling leaves, and it’s a time lots of makers spend making Christmas gifts for family and friends. How can you not be excited with handmade gifts to plan and make?! Maybe I’m just looking for an excuse to buy more yarn…
Anyway, this edition is going to be themed around everything autumn. You’ll be coming behind the scenes at my family’s yarn shop and getting an exclusive look at our new window display. We also have a very exciting and brand new yarn in Yarn Corner, so there’s lots to get your crafty cogs turning!
Granny squares in an instant! Brand new for Autumn 2022 comes the perfect upgrade for all you chronic granny square makers out there. Spanish brand Katia’s Instagranny is a 50g pure merino wool line that calls for 5 to 5.5mm hooks/needles and offers 3 complete granny squares with edging and stitching in one ball. Now that autumn is really underway, there’s nothing I love more than cosying up with a good crochet project. This year I seem to have found the perfect one! I’ve been working on the scarf I showed you in the last edition and it’s grown quite a bit since then. The beginning section was filet crochet, but now I’ve moved onto the next section it’s patterning up similar to a granny square style but in rows. My tension has really improved now there are less gaps to create in the crochet fabric, so it’s definitely given me some improvements to think about for next time.
There’s a 4 row repeat so it’s been easier getting into a rhythm with this project. The yarn looks even better now it’s patterning up; the rich purple and lilac shades are my favourite, and of course I love the sparkle running through the whole piece. The rest of the scarf will involve repeating these rows until it’s just before the desired length, and then repeating the first section but with the pattern in reverse. I did cut a bit of a corner as I was supposed to weigh the first section of the scarf but in my defence I just got too hooked on the crochet…
It didn’t really seem like a necessary step; the objective was to weigh it so you’d know exactly how much yarn to save for the last section. I have 3 balls of yarn and the first section used less than half a ball so I think I’ll likely have a bit of yarn leftover anyway. At least that’s what I’m telling myself😂

Our customer projects this week are bringing the bright colours! Pictured left is a crochet project by Sheila, who is making a granny square cardigan using new yarn Aurora double knit by James C. Brett. She is using a mixture of 3 shades and all the different colours just look great together, I love the variation. The shades used are 01, 02 and 06. Sheila told us she managed to get 15 granny squares from just one ball of yarn which is great value for a 100g ball!
The picture on the right shows a stunning blanket made by Tony using yarn from her stash. She used a free online tutorial from Hooked by Robin which is actually one I have saved to make in the future so it’s great to see it in action! It’s called the 3D Petal Granny Square - click here to see the free crochet tutorial. The texture of the design is so striking and the bright coloured yarns really bring it to life.
Thank you to Sheila and Tony for sharing your #babesinthewoolhull projects with us! I can’t wait to see what our customers come up with next time🥰
